Capitol Police Duties
Nevada Capitol Police provide police services at 65 state-owned or leased buildings in Carson City and Las Vegas. Officers are assigned to one of two geographic areas:
Duties include assignment to the Capitol Building, Governors Mansion, Supreme Court, Attorney General's Office, or patrol. Officers maintain surveillance over their specific areas and provide general police services.
Officers create a safe environment for elected and executive officials as well as security for more than 500 employees and 700 daily visitors in the Grant Sawyer Building. General police services for the complex and parking areas is provided as well. Officers assigned to the Supreme Court provide similar services.

Pay and Benefits
Capitol Police are sworn peace officers whose jurisdiction is specific state property.
Capitol Police are classified as a DPS Officer I within the Department of Public Safety. Minimum starting salary is $44,000.
Officers joining the force with no prior law enforcement experience attend 19 weeks of basic law enforcement training at the Department of Public Safety Academy in Carson City or Las Vegas.
Separate recruitments are offered for Carson City and Las Vegas duty assignments.
Capitol Police receive the full State of Nevada health insurance and Police/Fire retirement benefits.

Minimum qualifications include graduation from high school and public contact experience. Please obtain a copy of a current State of Nevada Job announcement for more specific information.
All applicants must complete a State of Nevada job application and a written test. Successful candidates must pass a physical agility test, an oral board interview, extensive background, psychological, polygraph, medical and drug screening examinations.
