Safety is not
on the minds of little ghosts
and goblins. On Halloween, the
hunt is purely for the candy
that lies behind every door. But
parents are learning trick or
treating is not a spectator
sport.
"We go with
family and there is never a time
that we turn our backs. There is
always one adult that goes up to
the door with them," said Albert
Ramos.
Strict rules
keep sex offenders from being
able to open their doors for
kids on Halloween, but parents
are still encouraged to know
which homes to avoid trying. "I
usually go in the neighborhood I
live in -- just around there and
that is it," said Kim Lucas.
"If they are
going somewhere outside of their
own neighborhood, definitely
look on the website to find out
who the registered sex offenders
are in that area," said Sgt.
Michele Jackson with Nevada
Parole & Probation.
Sgt. Jackson
says teams will again be out
with Operation Scarecrow, making
sure sex offenders are obeying
the rules and keeping to
themselves this holiday.
"Children are out in mass
numbers and we are focusing on
the offenders that have focused
on children in the past. If
their conviction has a child
victim, then those are the ones
that we definitely want to make
sure that they are doing what
they are suppose to do and are
not looking for new victims,"
she said.
Beyond making
sure there is no candy being
passed out at homes, officers
will also be at large gatherings
making sure they don't see any
familiar faces. "We are looking
for any place that a sex
offender might think they can
sneak by and go undetected. We
are going to try and be there,"
said Sgt. Jackson.
