For
most parents, the thought of having your children
knock on a stranger's door can be scary.

State
parole and probation officers are conducting Operation
Scarecrow in which they remind known sex offenders that
they are not allowed to have any contact with children
on Halloween.
But
police say there are also steps that parents can
take to make sure their children are safe when trick or
treating.
For
most parents, the thought of having your children knock
on a stranger's door can be scary. However police say
parents can do some research and find out if there are
sex offenders living near them and have their
children avoid those homes.
Research
the sex offenders living in your area
With
more than 3,700 registered sex offenders in the valley.
"Even though a large number of sex crimes are
between people who are known to each other, there is a
real present danger presented to children by individuals
who they have never seen before in their life. Predators
who use nights like Halloween to prey on innocent
children," said Metro Officer Bill Cassell.
Metro
has a sex
offender website where you can search for predators
in your area. It's as simple as typing your
address in.
Even
though sex offenders are not allowed to have Halloween
decorations up and cannot hand out candy, it's an extra
precaution.
"99-percent
of offenders are going to be compliant and the ones that
aren't are going to be looking over the shoulder to see
if it is us knocking on their door," said Lt. Tom
Ely, parole and probation office.
