Application Process

To apply to join the Nevada Department of Public Safety you must register with NVAPPS in order to submit an application

To apply for an open position, please register with NVAPPS.  

Written and Physical Testing:

Applicants for sworn positions must successfully pass a written examination and physical fitness test. Upon acceptance or your application, you will be informed of the next testing date.

The physical agility requirements for Applicant/Screening are as follows:

  • 11.5" vertical jump
  • 24 sit-ups in 1 minute or less
  • 18 push-ups, no time limit
  • 300 meter run in 82 seconds or less
  • 1.5 Mile run in 20:20 or less
  • Agility run in 23.4 seconds

The physical agility requirements for P.O.S.T Certification are as follows:

  • 14" vertical jump
  • 30 sit-ups in 1 minute or less
  • 23 push-ups, no time limit
  • 300 meter run in 68 seconds or less
  • 1.5 mile run in 16:57 or less
  • Agility run in 19.5 seconds

Fitness Standards & Examples

Background Investigation:

An extensive background investigation is then conducted. The background includes a complete criminal history check, the inspection of the applicant's driving record and a credit report. Applicants must completely fill out the Background Application. For assistance filling out this form, please refer to the instructions. The Backgrounds Unit will send you a Background Packet upon successful completion of the examinations and interview. You will receive instructions where to return the background packet.

This is a very important step in the process. The information provided will be used to conduct a complete background investigation. If the backgound information packet is not complete as directed in the instructions, with all attachments, it will be returned.

Phase II of the Background Investigation for Sworn Officers:

Applicants, who successfully complete the initial background phases, may receive a conditional job offer. Subsequent phases in the selection process for sworn officer include medical, visual, and audio examinations, a psychological evaluation, drug screening and polygraph.
